James Burnett is a veteran public relations executive and award-winning former journalist.
A native of southeast Virginia, James began his communications career as an editorial fellow at the Financial Times, where he was a banking reporter and FT.com stock market editor. He went on to a 16-year news career with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Miami Herald, and Boston Globe, winning or sharing in a National Headliner Award, AP Managing Editor's Award, and Pulitzer Prize, along the way. James was also a contributor to CNN, PRI and NPR.
James ended his news career at the Globe following a team Pulitzer win for coverage of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and moved into public relations as an executive in the top-tier nonprofit sector, then as a higher ed crisis management consultant and speechwriter, and next as as a strategy director for Paris-based, global PR firm, MSLGROUP.
In 2018 James returned to Milwaukee and has worked since then as a consultant, PR director for a startup agency, and head of public affairs and chief of staff for a large law enforcement agency.
A member of the Public Relations Society of America and National Association of Black Journalists, James serves on the boards of several nonprofit institutions, including Wellpoint Care Network, the Jewish Museum of Milwaukee, and Penfield Montessori School. He lives on Milwaukee County's north shore with his wife, two children, and their black lab pup.
